Fort Smith, Arkansas – The Fort Smith community is mourning the loss of Stacy Bates, a cherished art teacher at Woods and Carnall Elementary Schools.
Mrs. Bates passed away unexpectedly on February 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, creativity, and mentorship that deeply impacted her students and colleagues.
Known for her enthusiasm and passion for the arts, Mrs. Bates inspired countless students during her years at Fort Smith Public Schools.
Her classrooms were filled with energy, as she encouraged young minds to explore their creativity and develop their artistic talents.
Woods Elementary Principal Sharla Whitson expressed heartfelt sorrow, stating, "Mrs. Bates brought creativity, joy, and inspiration into our classrooms, nurturing the artistic talents of countless students. She fostered a love for art through her teaching."
Tributes poured in from friends and colleagues, with Melanie Haack Thigpen sharing, "So terribly sad. I know the students and the faculty will struggle with this. She looks like she would be fun with the kids and full of spirit."
