Robert Brooks, Victim of Brutal Beating at Marcy Correctional Facility, Passes Away, Sparking Outrage and Calls for Justice

Marcy, New York – Robert Brooks, a 43-year-old Black man, tragically passed away on December 10, 2024, after being brutally beaten by correctional officers at Marcy Correctional Facility in Marcy, New York.

Brooks, who had recently been transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility on December 9, was subjected to violent abuse by several correctional officers. Despite being handcuffed and visibly injured, Brooks was relentlessly beaten across the prison grounds, including in the infirmary, until he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

The official cause of death was asphyxia due to compression of the neck. The body camera footage reviewed by investigators painted a chilling image of a defenseless man being attacked while restrained.

In response to the incident, New York Governor Kathy Hochul ordered the termination of 13 officers and a nurse involved in the brutality. As of February 20, 2025, six officers face criminal charges including murder and manslaughter.

On social media, comments have poured in expressing both outrage and condolences. Rebekah Juarez wrote, “There was no reason for that amount of violence against Mr. Brooks. I hope they all are found guilty.” Sandra Torres also shared her condolences, saying, “Rest in peace Robert Brooks, glad his family is ensuring justice is served.”

The death of Robert Brooks has ignited calls for reform and accountability in the prison system, highlighting the need to protect incarcerated individuals from inhumane treatment.
