Luis “Poppi” Wheeler Tragically Killed in Hit-and-Run Accident on Cooper Foster Park in Lorain, Ohio

Lorain, Ohio – Luis “Poppi” Wheeler, 50, was tragically killed in a hit-and-run incident on February 8, 2025, at Cooper Foster Park in Lorain.

Wheeler, a homeless man known to many in the community, was struck by a vehicle that left the scene.

According to Lorain County Coroner Frank Miller, Wheeler died shortly after the accident from severe brain injuries and multiple fractures.

Those who knew him remember him as a kind soul who was always willing to lend a hand.

Tone Aponte shared a heartfelt memory, stating, “He was one of the nicest homeless guys out always looking for extra work and did a good job.”

Heather Axford, who was one of the first to report the incident, described how her daughter discovered Wheeler’s body on the road and called for help.

“He didn’t deserve to be left there like that,” one family member wrote on a GoFundMe campaign to cover his funeral expenses.
